Groundnut cultivators are in trouble !

The prediction of rain for 3 extra days in delta has prompted worry a number of the groundnut cultivators in Thiruvonam vicinity where the groundnut seeds sown on approximately 250 acres have already been affected due to the recent rain. According to the president, Thiruvonam Vattara Vivasayigal Nalasangam, R.Govindaraj the fields in which groundnut seeds were sown remained under water for few days after the rain lashed this a part of Thanjavur district 10 days in the past. After the water drained, the farmers re-ploughed the fields as there has been no rain during the last week.



Though the rain water that stagnated inside the fields had drained in an afternoon or, the subsurface water that remained within the fields affecting the increase of groundnut seeds sown in those fields. Meanwhile, the Agriculture Department officers have talked about that adoption of deep ploughing technique would help reduce the effect of water logging and save the crop to some extent whereas loss of crop couldn't be avoided on the fields where guide sowing was taken up.
